Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal

Functions

The vision for the role of biosphere parks in the 21st century is reflected in the international UNESCO guidelines and in the Seville Strategy. The Seville Strategy contains the following main aims:

1. Regional development

2. Nature conservation

3. Research

4. Environmental education

In order to meet these varied functions, biosphere parks are divided into zones according to the influence of human activity and the conservation status enjoyed by nature. In the core zone, classic nature conservation is in the foreground. The aim is for nature to develop without human influence. In the buffer zone, ecologically sustainable activities and ways of using the land are permitted and the development zone is the living, working and relaxation space for the people.
