The body behind the biosphere park concept is UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). In 1970 UNESCO began the programme "Man and the Biosphere" (MAB) and built up a worldwide network of biosphere reserves (= biosphere parks). These reserves now range from the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia to the Biosphere Park Grosses Walsertal.
