Nikolaus Walter’s photos show the Grosses Walsertal in all its craggy and fascinating beauty; but they also reveal the civilising traces of how nature has been shaped and exploited by man, despite the steep slopes, creating its own particular aesthetic. It is a rare and exciting undertaking for a photographer such as Nikolaus Walter to follow the development of a region over a quarter of a century. His unerring eye for the picture with high symbolic content has not only created a first class document of the times but also a language of the image which transcends itself.
