What Happens in the Biosphere Reserve

Project leader: Regional Planning Association Grosses Walsertal (6 communities)

Project period: since autumn 2006

The aim of the Alchemilla herb project is to highlight the diversity and value of wild and cultivated plants in the Biosphere Park Grosses Walsertal.
Biosphere parks stand for a high level of biological diversity which can be maintained with the aid of sustainable working practices. This diversity relies to a large extent on cultivation by the farming families and their knowledge.

The women of the Alchemilla Herb Association have made it their goal to pass on this knowledge and to communicate the special importance of plant diversity. And they have a good tradition behind them. For generations it has been the women in particular who passed on in practical ways the understanding of herbs and the knowledge of how to process and use them and so made people aware of the abundance of cultivated and wild plants which was and is available in an apparently barren landscape.

Alchemilla is a project by women for women
Exchange and mutual recognition, strengthening of women and self-determination of earning opportunities which can be easily combined with family and agriculture are some of the most important aspects of the project. The women use their range of products and services to demonstrate the value of the varied cultural landscape and make an important contribution to creating value in the region.
