The "Mountain Timber" project grew from an initiative by a group of craftsmen (joiners, carpenters, sawmills) and a forestry business who were building a wooden house together for an environmentally aware doctor. After successfully completing the build a joint concept was worked out to make it possible to exploit the local mountain timber with its special characteristics in an environmentally friendly way and to work it into high quality end products in the Biosphere Park Grosses Walsertal before marketing these products themselves. Since that time, all of the larger forestry owners, all of the municipal administrations of the valley and 9 craft businesses have become involved in the project. From the woodland to the finished wood stove, the chain of production is complete. As well as being economically important to the businesses, this project is also of great significance to the whole valley from a social point of view. The continued existence of the businesses is safeguarded, skilled jobs are retained and new ones created.
